...which will indicate the folks are aware of my
safety.
The big event of the day is the war news and today's
seemed good.
Aug 10th Well all the athletic exercise of yesterday
wasn't of any material benefit as I caught a beautiful cold, in the
shape of soreness of stomach muscles and arm and leg muscles due to
foolishly taking off my raincoat and going about 2 hours in sweaty
clothes. However all will be sunshine tomorrow.
A bit of rain today and that faulted by a good
warm spell of sunshine.
The dinner bell rings now for the second class
or group and is real good. barley soup, sauerkraut & jam.

This morning I played two hours of volleyball to
take the stiffness out of me, but it did not help much.
The Americans here are surely a fine bunch of men,
and have taken care of us in a real fatherly manner.
They give us from their scant stores to break the monotony of the
meals.
There are some of the captains of merchant ships
here which were sunk by the "Wolf" a year or more ago.
Today we received the samples of our photographs
and they are really good. I intend sending to you pictures of our
group and of ourselves - separate. I
mean of Dr. Stevens, and Swarts...

...and myself. These photos when you see them will
assure you better than anything else that I am well and full of pep
and do not intend to let this life here make me lazy or sickly or
in any way useless.
Today I finished reading the "The Fashionable
Adventures of Josua Leraig", by David Graham Phillips, and after
plowing thru the life of a very crude and impossible being in the
person of "Craig" for some 280 pages the remaining 76 were
chuck full of good laughs and of very unexpected situations. I felt
repaid for reading it.
It is now 7:15 PM I think...

...I'll hop outside and have a half hour or so
at volleyball.
Spent the evening talking over incidents of interest
in the old battalion with Sloan.
Bed as usual at 10:30 when the electric lights
go out.
Aug 11/1918 Slept soundly till 3:30 AM, and was
awakened by the cold, this being the case naturally a cold time is
ahead for the Winter here, with August so cold as to wake a fellow
from a sound sleep.
Today I saw a German girl that reminded me of Mabel
Gross is it possible she is a mother now, the thought just struck
me. Perhaps it is so. If so she will no doubt take on weight and...
