...look like god intended a woman to look, and
less of a skeleton.
No chance to go to church today as for 3 sundays
in succession however we look forward to the advent of Chaplains for
all religions here soon.
Dinner is ready now and I am hungry.
Dinner is over and I am still hungry. However at
3 PM we will have a cup of tea, a little jam and a small slice of
bread this will do nicely.
Have started a little book of Jack London's "Smoke
Bellows". A Klondike story 291 pages so hope to finish it today.
Today Capt. Burpee of M.O.R.C. gave me his photo
and it is very good, he is a dandy wide awake fellow, had bee captured

...outside our room which accommodates at present
20 Americans and play a bit of volleyball.
Played volleyball till 8:30 from supper time. Went
to bed feeling good and tired physically.
August 12, 1918 Up at 7:30 took 15 minutes of good
calisthenics a 1/4 mile run a good cold bath - dried off and rubbed
myself down till 8. Came into our room to a good breakfast of corned
beef and fried onions and a cup of tea and some jam.
At 9:30 went on an American walking party, and
returned at 11:30.
Weather today very much like our own Spring and
the country about is beautiful.
Dinner over nothing to do but read or play tennis
so...

I'll read a new book. To refer back to this last
book I read "Smoke Bellows". It was good, easy reading,
full o\f adventure and of great test of endurance, a bit of fiction
to be sure, but written in masterful style. Too bad London is dead.
So I'll start the "Green Flag" by A.
Conan Doyle. This is an Irish war story. I hope it will be good.
I wonder what my little wife is doing just now,
It is 1 o'clock here German time 12 o'clock French time and 7 hours
earlier at home sweet home. So at 5 AM I hope my little lady and Binnie
& Marie Louise are sound asleep and well.
I feel fine physically and hope all at home are
well as I am and will...

...keep well. It is
a little over 3 months since I left the states and it seems 6 at least.
I have surely the sincere regret of not having been of much value
to my country.
I was captured after about 3 days of front line
work in a big offensive of the Germans & all my men and officers
were to the the best of my ability casualities in that they were either
killed, wounded, captured or missing.
I only know of about 10 men and 1 officer killed,
& of about 60 men & 1 officer captured this includes the few
who were wounded.
I often think of my men of their bravery and of
that of the officers. And I am very anxious indeed to hear that some
at least...
